Mental Health Professional, Equine Specialist

Katie Olson, PsyD, LP (she/her) is a licensed psychologist who provides equine-assisted therapy. She has found that interacting with horses can be helpful for clients who need assistance with emotional healing and regulation. Being naturally sensitive and intuitive, horses tend to react to the energy of those around them. Their interactions with client(s) may highlight potential problem areas, such as difficulty with boundary setting or trusting others, that Dr. Olson can address in a safe and secure therapeutic environment. The non-judgmental nature of horses helps clients to feel comfortable, making letting their guards down easier.

Prior to providing equine-assisted therapy, Dr. Olson’s background involves providing mental health therapy to individuals, couples, and families in an office setting, as well as coaching, team building, and developing leadership skills in employees in a work setting. Her primary approach with clients is a humanistic one, exploring with them their sense of self-worth, what they value, and what they’d like to focus on to improve their life (and/or work) circumstances. If needed, Dr. Olson is able to administer and interpret a variety of personality, intelligence, achievement, cognitive, and neurological assessments to shed light on intra- and interpersonal dynamics that could effectively inform a treatment plan. 

On a personal note, Dr. Olson rides in the Hunter/Jumper discipline with her Dutch Warmblood, Odi. She is married and lives in St. Paul with her husband, three children, and two dogs.
